Boss asks employee making $62K to front $2300 for a business trip, calls him broke because he can't afford it: 'You need to plan better and have an emergency fund.'

If a business cannot afford to put $2300 on a company credit card, you should not keep working for them.

Traveling for work can be stressful and questionable if you have to pay for your own expenses. I have a friend who used her own credit card to book her hotels and flights for a work trip because she wanted the credit card points, and it was definitely more stress than those points were worth to fill out the paperwork to get her company to reimburse her. Even if you want to buy a Diet Coke at the airport, you can't help but think that you're using your own dime for a trip that is not for your own personal enjoyment. Now, if your company hands you a credit card and tells you to use it to charge all of your expenses (within reason), a work trip is probably a joyous occasion. That goes doubly if you don't have to get a receipt for every purchase. But businesses put policies in place for a reason, but if a business cannot trust an employee with a company credit card, they probably also can't trust them to travel to a conference to represent the company. 

If a company straight-up can't afford a business trip, they shouldn't be planning one. Another one of my friends was recently asked if she'd share a hotel room with her boss because allegedly it'd "save the company money." Not only is that a totally inappropriate request, but if the company can't shell out a couple of hundred extra dollars for more than one hotel room, they've got problems that attending a conference cannot solve.
